Sulindac belongs to the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class of medications, used to alleviate inflammation and pain. It is not particularly useful as a fever-reducer.

Patients buy sulindac for a variety of conditions, perhaps most commonly for arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (a type of arthritis that affects the spine), and acute gouty arthritis. In addition to relieving pain and swelling, sulindac improves joint mobility, range of motion, and general joint function while reducing the duration of exercise-induced stiffness.

The medication is also commonly used to treat subacromial bursitis and supraspinatus tendinitis, severe menstrual cramps, and pain or inflammation from a wide range of other conditions. Though not as widespread, patients sometimes buy sulindac to inhibit growth of precancerous colon polyps or lesions.

Sulindac, also sold under the brand name Clinoril, is less likely than most NSAIDs to cause gastric side effects.

What to Expect from Sulindac

Used to manage pain or inflammation treatment with sulindac is largely similar in most respects regardless of the condition being treated, but can vary tremendously when it comes to duration of treatment. The medication is administered by tablet, typically taken twice per day with food.

In otherwise healthy adults:

• Treatment typically starts with 100 to 150 mg, taken twice per day.
• If needed dosage can be increased to 200 mg taken twice per day.
• Do not exceed a total of 400 mg per day.

Some pain relief should be experienced with the first dose, though it may take a few days of treatment for full relief, particularly when severe inflammation is involved. Most patients experience maximum benefit within 7 days of treatment, and in many cases treatment may then end.

In more severe, chronic conditions treatment may continue for much longer, sometimes for years. In long-term use it is rare that patients take the maximum dose; 50 to 100 mg twice per day is far more common. Long-term use at high doses greatly increases risk of serious complications.

Before you Buy Sulindac

Note that patients who have experienced allergic reactions or other serious adverse effects from other NSAIDs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, are at increased risk of experiencing similar reactions to sulindac (or any other NSAID).

In most respects side effects associated with sulindac are similar to those experienced with any other NSAID; typically mild and not cause for concern. However, all NSAIDs are also associated with more serious complications, though rare:

• High blood pressure
• Stroke
• Heart attack
• Anemia
• Bleeding or ulcers in the stomach or intestine
• Liver damage
• Kidney damage

Patients with a history of ulcers, gastric issues, high blood pressure, and any cardiovascular issues are at increased risk of experiencing the above complications. Discuss risks and warning signs with a doctor before using sulindac or any NSAID.

Sulindac can suppress contractions and premature labor; however, the medication should be administered only under doctor supervision for this purpose as, like any NSAID, it can cause complications if taken in the later stages of pregnancy.
